AAT #021 (11/04/09): Surprise, Surprise, Surprise!

Wow, what an Argyll. This was our long-awaited crossover event with 9th UB Radio. We called it UBgyll UBventure TrUB, and it was four hours of music with very little talk. Whoever was playing the current record would spin a slightly damaged spinner to determine who would follow them at the turntables.

You can listen to the whole show here, or just the argyll portion here, or just the UB portion here.

The result was this eclectic list of records…

Phase 5 – COLUMBIA SCHOOL OF BROADCASTING

Well, there you have it. You’ll have to download both the Argyll Adventure Tree and 9th UB Radio files to get the whole show. Even then, a few songs will be missing in the middle and at the end, because the recordings cut off the last ten minutes of the second and fourth hours. Still plenty of stuff to hear. Lots of interesting juxtapositions and surprising picks from all four of us. I’ll post the links when Aaron posts the podcasts.

AAT#018 (08-06-09): UBgyll UBventure Tree

We were out of town for our second Thursday-night webcast, but the show must go on. Luckily for our listeners, dAS and Ninah sat in for us, and played songs exclusively from compilations. We’re calling the show, UBgyll UBventure TrUB. The second half of the 4-hour mega-show, webcast as the regularly scheduled 9thUBradio immediately afterward, can be downloaded here.

If you’ve never listened to UB, this is a fine place to start. Noise, art rock, industrial music, even stuff on the edge of pop. You just never know what’s going to come next.

Flutes, Whistles and Ocarinas – Susan Rawcliffe
Will? – Maybe Mental (not sure which track. they were on Dry Lungs vols. I and III but not II)
Willie V.2 – J. Allen Williams
Deconstruction In D. Minor – Trance
Funny Funny – The Bran Flakes
Crybaby Duck – ECC
I Don’t Believe in Evolution – ECC
Yesterday Man – Robert Wyatt
Don Alfonso – Mike Oldfield
Go and Sit Upon the Grass – Ivor Cutler
Tehuan – Suraya
The Post-Asiatic Lost War Dream Music
The Jet Black Hair People
bleached point 1-6 [11/99 mix of Steev Hise’s Original] – Wobbly
Fast Talk – Negativland
Are We Not Clowns? We Are Bozo – The Firemen
Mongoloid – The Deadliner?
a bunch of stuff we don’t know what it was
something by Snakefinger
Blue Rosebud – The Residents

Sorry, we’re relying on back-announcing for this playlist, and said back-announcing was sorely lacking in the second half of the show. If you want to know who all that music was by, ask dAS & Ninah!

AAT #013 (03-20-09): The Texture of Noise

For lucky Argyll #13, we really brought the UB. Starting with an eerie silence, we soon filled the webwaves with some nods to the original AAT show and lots and lots of texture. This show features clips recorded in August, 1986 from On the Verge, a show astonishingly still on the air at people’s radio KKUP, Cupertino (Cowabunga!).

Given that this is our noise show, you can expect to hear a few improvised audio collages among the pop songs and experimental pieces. Together, let’s explore The Texture of Noise.

Orses Opera – Crawling with Tarts
Solar Drums – Sun Ra
Tomorrow Never Knows Slowed Down and Sped Up
Beatles – John Oswald
Indeterminacy – John Cage with David Tudor
Two Friends – Dan Deacon (left channel only – doh!)
Won’t You Keep Us Working – The Residents

Persuasive Conditioning – The Bran Flakes
Pretender – John Oswald
Hippopotami – Chris Watson

Étude aux Chemins de Fer – Pierre Schaeffer
For the Trees – Matmos
The Willsaphone Stupid Show (excerpt) – Negativland
Fire on the Mountain – The Blitzoids
Drone Gnomes – Big City Orchestra

Melancholia – William Basinski
Requiem for a Doll – Steven Clark
Kill Your Gods – Pandas of Black Metal
Cap the Knife – Fred Frith
Live at the Metro, Kyoto – DJ Eye
Kaleidophon (Strict) – Carter Scholz

Not sure if the track order is exactly right above, but you get the idea.
