AAT #022 (12/03/09): Holiday Assortment

What a strange holiday season this has been so far. Everything seems off-kilter. As America stumbles to the end of a rotten decade, money’s tight, illness abounds, and now we’re stepping up the war in Afghanistan. The Argyll Adventure Tree feels very in touch with the zeitgeist, though we’re not as sunk in misfortune as many of our fellow Americans.

Michael was unable to join me for this episode of AAT. I made my musical choices quickly, instinctively: there’s anger and joy, apocalyptic despair and guarded hope, disappointment and bemusement. It’s a typically eclectic mix of genres, but with a new twist: Classical and Classic Rock join the usual Indie Rock, Art Rock, Country and Jazz. Here’s the rundown:

One Christmas Catalog – CAPTAIN SENSIBLE
Vietnam – WE ARE WOLVES
Colors – THE MINUTEMEN
Formicary – SLEEPYTIME GORILLA MUSEUM
Crepuscule with Nellie (Live) – THELONIOUS MONK QUARTET WITH JOHN COLTRANE
Talkin’ Whiskey – YARD SALE
Whole Lotta Losin’ – MONSTERS OF FOLK
7 & 7 Is – LOVE
Shake That Devil – ANTONY & THE JOHNSONS
Fables – THE DODOS
Six Years – BERMUDA TRIANGLE SERVICE
Lookin’ for Trouble – DON PEAKE
Honor Roll – MARTIN MULL
Release the Stars (Live) – RUFUS WAINWRIGHT
Der stürmische Morgen / Täushung (from Winterreise) – SCHUBERT [Fischer-Dieskau/Brendel]
Confection – NELS CLINE SINGERS
New Fang – THEM CROOKED VULTURES
See the Leaves – THE FLAMING LIPS
The Real Me – THE WHO
Poslepu – UZ JSME DOMA
[Vivian & Ondine (excerpt) – WILLIAM BASINSKI]
An Orkney Wedding, with Sunrise – PETER MAXWELL DAVIES, ROYAL PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA
